Long time no post, or enter anything. Well thats what college does to
you...
Anyways, my entry is a games workshop tomb king. Its a little
converted, not too much, just a bit to give a litle more character.
Basically all I did was reposition the shield arm and add a bunch more
rags. Oh yea, and get rid of the wierd looking gorget (neck thing) and
the spikes on the sword.
As for the painting, I tried to create an in frame lighting effect.
Where all the highlights point towards one direction on the mini
(coming from the lantern at his feet). This let me have a blast in
blending colors, which is something ive been experimenting with
lately, where the color of the robe changes from purple to red as it
gets closer to the light source (etc). It gives the entire piece a
rather drastic look and if nothing else, helps it stand out. I like to
use a quasi-wet blending method. I use colors really watered down, so
they have smooth transitions and then use a combo of mixing the colors
on the mini and in the tray, if that makes any sense. I used this
technique even more with the dead guy at his feet, where the color
darkens past its usual color, to brown or black. Which really helps to
keep the focus on the actual mini.
Also I experimented with nmm. Granted Im not great with it, and I have
a looooonnnggg way to go but im pretty pleased with what Ive been
getting so far. Ill probably mess around some more and try rust and
other nifty little bits.
The thing that really surprises me is the drastic transitions needed
to pull off nmm, I got it from a green and brown ink wash all the way
to pure white, and it still feels that I could have done more....
Wierd, but oh well.
The base was fun, I got bored and did the purple ring around the base,
which was actually a challenge, considering the flatness of it, which
makes the transition a lot more obvious if I were to screw up.
And then of course, theres the freehand. If you have seen any of my
work... you'll know im compleatly anal about freehand. About 95% of my
work has some freehand in it, it just brings that little extra
creativity and origionality to the mini. Also in this piece I started
experimenting with shading in freehand now, which is a blast.
Im sorry about the picture though. My hard drive died and that was the
only picture left of this guy. And im really too lazy to unpack my
camera and take another. But at least it obeys the 2 angles rule. heh.
If anyone has any questions please feel free to email me. I dont read
the posts often enough, so I may miss it... yea email is safer. |
