Description : Let's see if this works :) After a long time I was able to finish a miniature, yay. This one was an experiment, done almost exclusively with washes and liquitex colors, only the skin base color was painted on "classically" and the glowing faces are Vallejo Model Color. No extensive NMM this time and I dropped the view where the blade is visible because of other aspects. I sculpted everything that is wrapped around the stone myself, in order to create a more "merged" feeling.
I started the painting by priming the miniature black and then creating shadows/highlights by applying white primer from above. then I used umber and siena hues to color the plates and the areas with skulls. Additionally I blended in some green and purple, in order to create effects that can be seen on "insect-chitin-exoskeletts" (is there a better word...?).
The "glowing" parts where done by washing the deep areas of the skulls with a dark blue and then gradually adding more white to the wash. so the deeper the recesses were the lighter they would come out.
The base is plaster, mounted on a standard rackham base and resembling stone, so that it fits onto my army's movement tray...
Looking at it now the views are probably not the optimal ones, but then again I could change it a million times and probably won't be satisfied ;)

Thanks for looking! And please leave comments, I always appreciate feedback! :)
It says "use these albums to post additional views" so you can see additional views in my "painter album" ;)

Wow! I couldn`t have guessed that it`s your mini - it so different :). Awesome nonetheless. I think I`ll try this priming white on black myself. By the way - what do you mean by liquitex colors?

Wow, very cool. He is definitely one creepy looking dude. I especially like the the light effect off the eyes. The color pallette is amazing.

I really like the glowing eyes...and the back side...not sure about the front side...leaves me with a feeling like its not totally finished...it may be caused by the experiment of working with washes...

A very different style from you - but excellent work none the less :)

Nice base too :)

It's interesting to see artists work with different techiniques outside their normal style, and you seem to have gotten the hang of this style. I think it has a very organic feeling that is very fitting for this figure.

Underpainting and washes really does create a different looking style than your usual. I think I like your usual style better. Washes leave too much of a watercolor effect, in that the highlights end up a bit dull. It's a good start for a figure, but I think you can bring everything up more by further highlights and washes to bring up the color. You did well with the glows, but the best one for sure is the actual eyes of the figure.
