Sparr Thomson, Drunken Goblin by Glyn

Sparr Thomson, Drunken Goblin by Glyn
Description : Well, where to begin here! This miniature is Sparr, from Hasslefree. He was done for the first Mad McGobbo Painting contest :) Also, I had a special request to paint the bottle as a Glenfiddich Scotch bottle, so I had to track down an empty for reference :P

I began with his skin. I used Vallejo mostly fo rthe colors. Starting with reflective green, I worked up to Dead flesh. I wanted to add some color too, so I used glazes of orange around his mouth, and on his ears and knuckles. Thought it would look pretty cool :) A little black mixed in for shading and the skin was done! Next came the tartan. I like to do things like skin and faces first, mainly because they are usually inside the mini and not on the outside if you take my meaning. Anyways, I went back to the Thomson tartan like I tried to render on my Coolmini Grom a while back. This time, I would leave out the yellow; it is just too much at this scale. I worked the whited on first, then using my Series 7 kolinsky, I did all of the black striping and finally the red. The base color was alldoen first, using tourqoise hihglighted up through Azure blue towards wolf grey. Once this was done, I found the pattern to be very stark (the black) and also, the folds on the back of his cloth were wreakign havoc with my tiny pattern... I was ready to dunk him, but I loved the skinwork so I decided to glaze various shades of the base blues over the pattern. I think it toned down nicely, and all it took was a little touch up here and there.

The mace was done using NMM and Smoke for weathering. The handle wrapping is bone color with chocolate brown shading and all of the straps etc are GW browns. His sideburns are vallejo oranges and the fur all different greys. I wanted to keep the greys slightly different from my NMM greys though.

The bottle was fun. Holy smokes. The glass itself wasn't too bad as I have doen a few clear bottles now, and even the fluid was fine. The label however, was quite small to work with. No actual words, but I think it *looks* like a Glenfiddich label anyhow :D The glass was done with GW Dark Angels green highlighted up with white.

The base was built up with greenstuff, painted like rock and the sand flockign painted as foliage. The water was painted on the base itself with azure blue to white at the edge by the rock, and then the layers of craft glue put over give it the water "effect"! Hope you like him!

Another great piece Glyn. Nice work on the tartan, but the bottle is amazing - looks like real glass.
