The Emporers Champion - By Morten Riber (Modo)

The Emporers Champion - By Morten Riber (Modo)
Description : Phew! Finally finished! It took me a while to paint this mini, but it was definately worth it.
To start with I made the gold with this recipe and method: Again I used the gold recipe I got from Silphid: Scorched Brown, Vermin Brown, Leprous Brown and Light yellow #010 from Vallejo model color range, which is like 50/50 yellow/white mix. I changed Silphid's recipe a little and added some white to the mix on the lightest points.

I have discovered while I painted it, that it is terribly important to only paint one color over the basecoat. That would mean when you fx paint the spot were the vermin brown is, it has to be on the basecoat (which is Scorched brown) because if you don't do this it will be a very funny color. An orange color if you paint it over the yellow actually.
I made the white with just mixing black and white. Nothing special, I just wanted a completely pure grey so I could add the colors myself instead of the brownish hue the light greys often have.
I made the sword with Cyril's wonderful technique, which you can find here: http://www.coolminiornot.com/article/aid/300

Lastly here is the colors and method I used to paint the cloth: The colors I used on it are actually very straightfoward (and that is the way I like to keep it with every recipe I use). I basecoated with Scorched Brown. I shadowed it with dark grey. For the highlights I used bleached bone with scorched brown and on the very top of the highlights I used bleached bone on its own. The trick is that you have to be more and more careful the more you add bleached bone to the mix. That means that if you make a mistake on a spot were there has been used a lot of bleached bone, you wouldn't be able to fix the mistake with bleached bone/scorched brown. You have to go all the way down and paint the spot over with scorched brown, or else a very funny light red color would appear, and it hasn't anything to do with the other colors on the cloth. So that is that is just plain ugly!

A very nice job here. You've done great work on the gold NMM and the brown cloth- really nice. The pommel of the weapon is excellent too. Not so convinced on the sword, the color choices and semi-rough nature of the painting makes it look to me more like stone than steel.

I agree with molebrain about the sword. Other rhan that I really like the miniature - you have done an outstanding job :) the brown robes are my favorite part.

Just amazing Modo, this is one of my fav paint jobs. The browns are just wonderful, i don't think i ahve seen better. The NMM is sweet and i rather like the burnished look to the sword. The only thing i don't care for is the laurels, i would rather have seen then as green. Outstanding!

not much to add that hasn't been said. i was very struck by the brown fabric- incredibly nice.

also, the sword handle?! i missed it at first, but the leather and the gold interwoven is outstanding.

well done.
