Kaîn the Scourge by Anders

Kaîn the Scourge by Anders "Ritual" Eklund
Description : This undead character from Rackham really exudes evil and I wanted to capture that when painting it. I wanted a look of decay, rather than darkness. I imagined him wearing armour that once could have been beautiful, shining and elegant, but has now corroded and turned to a reddish brown from rust, dirt and dried blood. The robe, I imagined, would be coarse, somewhat decomposed and stained from rot, mud and gore. I then imagined him walking slowly across a dried out, barren landscape of rock and dried thorns.

I went about realising this by using a dark red brown colour to shade the NMM armour, both steel and gold. I used a green brown as base colour for the gold, so that it wouldn't look to shining. The robe was painted using a green grey base coat. I shaded it with dark brown and gave parts of it a couple of washes with red brown and orange. It was highlighted using beige. It was given a final highlight on all raised areas with ivory applied in a crosshatch pattern to give the fabric a coarse, textured look and make it feel heavy. The ripped hem of the robe was given extra attention so that every little hole or tear would be visible. The horns and skull was painted using a mix of grey and pale flesh. It was then highlighted with pale flesh and white.

I think the cloak, horns, sword blades, and darker areas of the armor turned out looking exceptionally.
I do, however, think that if you were aiming for a "decayed" look, the edge highlighting on the armor is much too bright in contrast. You're right, he does look "evil" but not "decayed" in my mind. This is probably blasphemy, but I think a light drybrushing of some mud-like color would completely change the whole tone of things.

Very moody! This is probably the best Kain I have seen so far. He looks quite old and 'dusty' to me which is a perfect fit imho :)
