This is my first 1:100 scale F.O.W. tank painted for display at our local GW Rogue Trader. Much smaller than the old 1:72 kits I used to do, and far less time consuming than a big kit (Gawds I would love to have th etime to work on my 1:35 Panther...) it took about 10 hours total time. The body and turret are resin, and the two track pieces and barrel are metal. It is quite heavy but fairly easy to work with.
I started out with a black undercoat (next time I would buy some Afrika Corps Mustard spray most likely) and worked up the base color with Iraqi Sand from Vallejo. Once satisfied, I used a mix of snakebite leather and the Desert tan to darken all along the edges and panel lines, leaving the middle of the panel areas lighter. Some of this shading is almost pure Snakebite leather. The green is a mix of Dark Angels green and Catachan green and the brown was Bestial or Bubonic brown, it eludes me at the moment. I basically painted the camo straight on, and used some very thin washes to feather the edges a little. I really wish I had an airbrush for this, would rule the world :D
The tracks and wheels are painted after, and the tracks were done black with silver on the worn edges etc and some brown here and there for grime in the tracks. The wheels were painted the saem as the tan on the body, and the rivets picked out in steel. Some of the worn edges were also done with steel on the wheels.
After all this, I went along the edges with bone white to make them stand ou ta little, and added some chestnut ink for rust stains here and there. I also used the chestnut to weather the chain on the side as well as some of the metal tools.
The only part I don't like are the freehand numbers, but then my excuse is that they didn't have stencils for this particular unit :D Heh... The crosses are also handpainted.
Very fun though, and I am glad I took the time to tackle a fond subject but one I haven't visited in many years :) |
