Am I too late...? Well worth a try anyway...unfortunately I was without internet over Christmas (well one time withouth internet, one time without the files *sigh*.
So here is my Ultramarine Chaplain/Champion...having a few fluff problems here but I cant stand black armor actually.
This was inspired by the artwork of Cassius in the new Space Marine Codex. I wanted to do the whole scene as a diorama, but time went by too fast and I decided to finish him as a single miniature.
I sculpted a lot of it myself, like the whole breast plate (except the skull, I was too afraid there, but I should have tried it) including the eagle symbol below his chin, both the arms, most of the feet, all purity seals (the sigils show small skulls each), the crozius (except the skull in the middle, same problem as on the breast plate), the laurels on the UM sign and on the exhaust thingies on the backpack (which was modified after an artwork from the Black Templar codex). The mouth got a little love too, I dont know if it was just a moulding accident on mine but he's now screaming and has more defined teeth and lips and he received a scar on his cheeckbone and over the eye.
I took him with me to the Italian Golden DEmon, but like so many he got moved to the open because the base was too large. Unfortunately I was a little pissed of and after a quarrel with the judge it ended up in the 40k "monster" category, which turned into a killer category by all the 40mm based entries that should have been in 40k single and left 40k single a comparably low quality one (hope I dont offend anyone...). Shit happens :)
He made first cut but obviously didnt place. Congratulations to all the winers in the category :)
No really new techniques here, just experimenting a bit with an unshaved face (has been painted by adding some dilluted black, then very dilluted codex grey where black and white met, then also a little less dilluted over the whole of the area and then gradually added some white to the grey to make everything a bit lighter.
Also I focused on setting highlights on the face in a credible way, went for pure white in places...oh and metallics for a change! those have been painted with brazen brass, then added some chainmail and washed with scorched brown/black and some turquise...since i dont like gold it had to be brass :) questions? just ask...

I think you did a great job. Technique is very sound and the style is nice as well. I do not like the red on the banner. I think it detracts from the model as a whole. I think Blue or purple would have been better

The internet ate my message! I'll try again :) I'm not a fan of the dirty style of painting, but it did turn out nice on this guy. It's also nice to see so much effort go into sculpting. Only suggestion would be to mind the proportions a bit more. Keep innovating, you're getting better all the time!

Howdy - all around brilliant painting and sculpting. However, there is something about the actual pose that strikes me as off, can't really place it. But SWEET paint for sure! peace

Right...too long *sigh* then I start again: Personally I think the feet are not long enough for the slightly stretched (note the additional eagle under his chin, hence the higher position of his head) and the overal bulkier torso and shoulders,

Excellent work, I really like the dirty, grimey, I've been killing these bugs all day look. I like the face, but still would prefer a pupil in the right eye. Also, the crozius looks weak compared to the rest.

Also, the freehand Ultra symbol on the banner is superb. The metallics are very well done, as is the base, except the head of the gaunt which should be closed and biting it's tongue off. Still, excellent piece. Could you describe your freehand technique.
