After a very long absence both from the community and from painting I hope to get back into the swing of things starting with a contribution to this month Golden Toadstool. The mini is a very old Citadel miniature - a limited edition (so I have been told...) Space Skeleton.
Since I painted the mini for a good friend and he wanted the suit to look as if it could have been NASA I had the daunting task to paint the suit and the skeleton with a similar palette yet trying to make everything look different. For the bone I started with a mix of Codex Grey and Purple Ink and worked up to Bleached Bone and finally Rackham's Neosis White for the final highlights. In between layers I added several glazes of different purples. The suit started with a mix of Fortress Grey and Kommando Khaki highlighted with Flat Aluminium. For shading and weathering I used mostly greens (Catachan Green, Olive Green) and reddish browns (Bestial Brown, Vermin Brown) but also some blue glazes to add variety.
The metallics where done using different techniques. The wrench started with Boltgun Metal, shaded with black and then highlighted with Boltgun Metal, Chainmail and Mythril Silver. To make it look rusty I used lots and lots of glazes, starting with the lightes color (Snakebite Leather) glazing less and less surface as the colors get darker (Black Red was used last). the base started with Boltgun Metal too but was highlighted with Chainmail only. Next I added several dark glazes for shading (black, Smoke and Dark Flesh), but the lighter colors where stippled on to create a very different effect compared to the wrench. Comparing both techniques I deffinitely prefer the use of glazes - this gives you more control and a smooth finish, but is also very time consuming.
For the helmet visor I started with a base coat of Scab Red and blended towards the edges with Golden Yellow and finally a small drop of Bleached Bone for the last layer or two. The darker parts where done using glazes of Black Red and finally black.

Nice job on the visor and the rusty O2 tanks. I would try to make sure that the highlights on top are brighter than hihglights under things.

Very cool idea for how to paint this, and nice execution of it! The rusted wrench looks great, and I also really like the wear and age on the model as a whole. Great job!
