Russ the Dwarf by Zaphod

Russ the Dwarf by Zaphod
Description : Well this is my first entry in some time as I haven't painted anything in several months. I am still working on the GW Giant but he is likely for next month. Sorry about the quality of the pictures. I seem to be having lighting issues.

I wanted to paint Russ for a workmate that has just began painting minis and is leaving to go back to school for another year now. The runes are from the Lord of the Rings and are "D" and "F" for his name.

I did his face first off, using some very thin red to glaze his nose. The eyes are very inset but not photogenic it seems. Next came the beard, which started with Vallejo Cadmium brown and worked up with GW Firey orange and bone white.

Metals are all Boltgun metal with ink washes and mithril silver for highlights. The shield trim and other bits are Tin bitz and Brazen brass. I don't think I will be varnishing future minis I do in metallics... or else I'll brush on the dull cote.

The cloth and shield were worked up from Graveyard Earth to bone white and skull white. Blues are Prussian blue, Andrea blue and white.

The base is a combination of greenstuff, sand and grass. The mushroom was made from greenstuff (I make one every time I have a bit left over) and a small length of paper clip. I painted it using Red gore and Bone white with the dots painted using codex grey and white, lightest at the top.

There are more pics in my painter album :D

I like the used look of the metal and the dirty look on the white cloth. The cracks on the shield look nice and I love the mushroom.( they used to be almost mandatory on GD winners in the 90s)

I really like the atmosphere of this piece, though I can't quite put what I like about it into words. Paint wise the worn shield is great, and I also really like the beard and the mushroom. I hope this means we'll be seeing more painted stuff from you again!
