This lovely figure from a Reaper's Lesser Elementals set (Dark Heaven 2538), sculpted by the talented Sandra Garrity.
I painted the elemental with the same technique used to paint cabochon (i.e., round) gems: base coat, darkened at the top, lightened at the bottom, with a pure white reflective dot or line at the top. I used Reaper Master Series paints, using Marine Teal as the base coat. I then used thinned Deep Ocean (a slightly darker shade) with a little Clear Blue and just a touch of Clear Green to work on the upper surfaces. The areas of "translucent light" are Surf Aqua, again with a little Clear Blue and Clear Green, then the same mixed with Pure White. Last, I gave the upper sections pure white reflections, as you do with the gems.
Testers Gloss Cote did the rest.

This technique for translucence is amazing. Extremely well done. I would love to see some works in progress on this.
