I was commissioned to create a vignette for Miniaturenland, the European distributors for the Dark Sword miniature line. This has long been one of my favourite Dark Sword minis. In the artwork it’s based on, the wizard is standing in front of a dragon, but I always got the impression of intense study from the miniature, so suggested this little scene. I used brass etched foliage for the sapling and the fern. I rounded out the trunk and branches of the sapling a little with layers of white glue.
As I knew it was intended for a display cabinet under the variable lighting of convention centers, I tried to paint this with more contrast than I typically use. I used a triadic colour scheme with blue-green, red-orange and purple. I added a touch of purple to the pillar to tie it into the figure, but tried to keep it from being overwhelming. A fair bit of work went into the pillar as a whole. The symbols are meant to be like pictograms resembling people, animals, etc. Then there were a lot of glazes, washes and layers in the painting of it.

Your color choices always impress me, and this one is no exception. It has a wonderful narrative quality as well. Nicely done.
