Arwen by Jericho

Arwen by Jericho
Description : This model was a lot of fun to work on. There's some fantastic Arwen models on the web that amount to some fantastic reference material.

I tried to practice "juices" and other types of subtle tinting on the model. I've used them once or twice before, but not on this scale. For this model, the jacket received several subtle washes of P3 Sanguine Base and Umbral Umber. The hair was washed with a mix of black and Catachan Green to tone down the reddish brown base color (which was Umbral Umber and some terracotta-ish color, I don't remember which). The blade recieved several washes of red, purple and blue, they barely show up in the pics but I really like Automaton's article on Coolmini, it gives lots of good ideas for advanced metallics. Strangely enough I used the same washes on the boots as I did on the sword :)

My final comment on the model is this: don't bother using the clump foliage that comes in the GW Hero basing kits they come out with once in a while. It looks like butt :P

Great job! The subtle glazes you've added would be more noticeable had you not included them...so excellent work with that. Adding the same glazes to other parts of the mini is a great technique to achieve unity, and realism. The only real crit I have is that her chest and sleeves should be highlighted up a bit more, as more light would reach those areas than from teh waist down. Great looking model!

Thanks Jeff, I'm not 100% on board with the zenithal lighting so many painters do, my eyes have like 9 years of seeing light and shadow differently on minis. It's tough to re-train yourself, but I think I'm getting a bit better at it. Now that I have a bit more of a working knowledge of the "juices" technique, I think I can try other things a bit more.

She looks good, I particularly like the soft quality you achieved on the cloth. The hair is also very pretty, though I think needs a few hot spots to convey a sense of shininess.

Don't really like LOTR but I must admit that I like your job here! Excellent smooth transitions in the cloth and really nice skintones! Top class!

Well very nice robes! All smooth except maybe the upper sleeves. Still, those folds get tiny on the LOTR minis (I'm still working over Aragorn). The face is nice and clean, though I agree with Rhonda about a little more shine on the hair.

Overall an awesome mini though!
