Amiryth Elmlighter by Whizard

Amiryth Elmlighter by Whizard
Description : One other small figure aside, Amiryth represents my return to painting after a six-month hiatus (thanks, World of Warcraft).

Technique-wise, I tried mainly to regain whatever skill I may have ever had. After a six-month break, this wasn’t easy. Beyond this, however, I tried to push myself to attempt moiré-painting, as represented by the purple haze (someone gimme a chord) about the hem of her blue cloak.

To achieve this effect, I essentially applied super thin glazes of Vallejo Model Color Violet to my already painted, shaded, and highlighted cloak. I then returned with a bit of my mid-tone blue and shade blue to smooth the transitions by dappling on these paints. It’s a bit a subtle, which suits this figure. I think, however, on my next piece, I’m going to be more aggressive with the technique.

The gold NMM pleases me for the most part, with the exception of the bow ornamentation, which I worked over three times in three different styles, all of which displeased me. The entire bow actually began as NM-gold, but I failed at this miserably as testified by Rodnik’s commentary – “dude, nice bone on the bow…” :-)

Anyhow, the rest of the figure was pretty straightforward for me. I used Reaper flesh shades for the flesh and VMCs for the remainder of the work.

As a point of interest, I did not mix any of my colors this time around, but instead chose to use straight glazes of existing colors to achieve my color transitions, highlights, and shades. This technique is used by a number of artists to my understanding and is one I should like to master. Not a bad serious first attempt. I like the technique.

Please feel free to hit me with any questions or comments.

Thanks!

-Whiz.

Beautiful work, really nice overall. Thanks for asking for questions, so here goes. Super thin? 10 to 1? 5 to 1? and what to what. Water, future, miracle wash? thanks.

I love it all, but the face most of all. So "real"

Lovely work! This is one of the best faces I've seen painted on this mini. The soft colours are wonderful, really suit the mood of the figure well. I'd love to hear more details about the no-mix glazing method some time.

Michael -- By super-thin I mean a wash of 10:1 water to paint or higher, so that a very watery transparency is achieved. The only additive I use a single drop of Liquitex Matte Medium, which I use in all my mixing now with distilled water.

Rhonda -- My lengthy explanation was clipped by the max character limit. I lost my reply. I'll get back to you on the MC forums.

This figure is superb I particularly like the flesh and the use of soft (pastel) colours on the rest of the figure. One question I have is what colours did you use for the bow as this is something I am struggling to do with VMC paints?

Peter -- I used German Camo Black/Brown, an orange brown, Lemon Yellow, and White -- all painted in streaks or striations with the orange kept dominate as a basecoat. Feel free to e-mail me for more explanation.
