I primed white. For the flesh I used VGC Bronze fleshtone, washed with Coat d’ Arms (CDA) Flesh wash then highlighted with the base colour, then CDA Elf Flesh, Elf Flesh mixed with white, then white ink.
The red loincloths were painted with VGC reds, Gory, Scar and Bloody. For the red on the shield edges I used Gory and Scar then glazed with VGC Hot orange.
The leathers were all painted with Citadel Snakebite leather, but the belts were basecoated black first, whereas the leggings were basecoated white. Then I glazed chestnut and brown inks over both, highlighting with SBL then SBL mixed with skull white.
The green of the weapon handle was CDA Dark Elf Green, washed with chestnut ink, then highlighted with the green basecoat mixed with skull white..
Now, the metallics.
Silver – not the shield. Basecoat was CDA gunmetal mixed with blue ink, washed with blue and black ink mixed at around 70:30. Successive highlights were CDA Chainmail, Chainmail mixed with VGC mithril, mithril on its own. A couple of very thin blue ink washes at various stages.
Gold – not the shield. Basecoated VGC Bald Moon Yellow. Then VGC Polished Gold. Then I glazed with yellow ink. Washed with chestnut ink, just the deepest recesses, then highlighted with Polished Gold, PG mixed 50:50 with mithril, then mithril only. Then I glazed again with the yellow ink.
The shield. I wanted to try some freehand but also wanted to enter the piece here – the GT deadline won the day! So I painted the red edging. The gold corners were PG mixed with black, then highlighted with PG mixed with scorched brown, the just PG. For the silver I basecoated with gunmetal, then washed with brown/black ink, highlighting with chainmail, then mithril. Painting the highlights on the “high” point of the shield and brushing away. |
